What is in a Name?

Letter from The Ancient Futurist
October 2026 | Sanctuary and Violet’s Light

Our ancestors never doubted that a name shapes the one who carries it. A name is spoken to a child every day of their life. It is an affirmation, an asé, a mantra, a vibration that enters the body until the two become one.
My mother’s name was Violet. Violet Joan Archer. This October marks ten years since she crossed, and I have been asking what a name can hold.
Red. Green. Violet
Picture a rainbow. Red rests at one edge and violet at the other, and between them lies everything the human eye can see. Red is the long, slow, warm end, the light that travels deep. Violet is the short, quick, high end, carrying more energy than any other light we can see. One step beyond it lies ultraviolet, the light our eyes cannot see and the world still receives.
Every plant above the ground does two things. It stands on the earth, and it reaches for the light. Its leaves drink the red and the violet, the two ends of the rainbow, and give back the green that lies between them. Life.
My mother was named Violet. And she was both.
She was my earth, my foundation. A hematologist who often held two and three jobs at once, and still kept an immaculate home, served gourmet dinners, and made every holiday beautiful on purpose. She was also the violet, the horizon. She saw what people were reaching toward before they could see it, and she held that edge open for them.
Most children receive one end of the light or the other. The ground without the vision, or the vision without the ground. To receive both, in full, from one person, every day, is extremely rare. I am a plant that grew in her light.
She is Egun now. Ultraviolet, where we cannot see her, and still guiding.

As long as I call her name, she lives.
